How Missionaries Can Stay Warm in the Winter

Multi-ethnic group of smiling business people meeting in snowy city street, smiling and talking. Winter clothing concept

As you are preparing for your upcoming mission, there is one thing, in particular, that's of great importance: your wardrobe. Missionary clothing can be very specific when it comes to requirements for what you can and shouldn't wear. Because of the specific requirements, it can be difficult to decide what to bring if you are going to an extreme climate, especially a cold climate where you'll need layers.

Maybe you aren't going to an extreme climate, but you know you'll be serving during the winter in a location that will be cold. No matter your situation, finding the right missionary clothing shouldn't be stressful, which is why we are going to try to break it down for you so you can be prepared.

Missionary Clothing for Elders During Winter

It's a given that, as an ambassador for the Lord, you're going to need to dress your best. Whatever winter wear you choose, it must have solid, conservative colors and be professional in appearance.

Layers are going to be your best friend during winter as an LDS missionary. Because your regular missionary activities require you to be outdoors frequently, you're going to need outerwear that keeps you dry and warm. Any outerwear you choose, such as a suit coat, sweater, winter coat, or rainwear, must be worn over your traditional white shirt and tie. And during activities that require you to dress your best, you are permitted to layer an overcoat over your suit coat.

If you're going to be serving in a cold location or during winter, here are a few items we recommend for Elders:

  • Suit coats
  • Winter coats
  • Sweaters
  • Rainwear
  • Beanies or other cold-weather hats
  • Scarves
  • Gloves

Missionary Clothing for Sisters During Winter

Just as is expected as the Elders, Sister missionaries must also dress their best as ambassadors for the Lord. Your attire must be professional in appearance, but you do have an advantage that the Elders don't -- you have a little more freedom when it comes to patterns and anything outside of solid colors. You'll just want to ensure that your outfits aren't distracting from your message and remain conservative.

Layers will also be your best friend in a cold climate. You'll need to choose outerwear that will keep you dry and warm wherever you go.

If you're going to be serving in a cold location or during winter, here are a few items we recommend for Sisters:

  • Winter coats
  • Rainwear
  • Jackets
  • Sweaters
  • Beanies or other cold-weather hats
  • Scarves
  • Gloves

Make sure to pack practically as well as professionally. You don't want to find yourself with a bunch of outerwear items that look cute but don't keep you warm or dry. Try to find a balance!
